I was so fascinated when I learned the etymology of "matrix" comes from the Latin word "mater" which means "mother". Matrix can also be a metaphor for the womb which represents a nurturing and protective environment that supports the growth and development of the objects or ideas it contains. Textiles have also been related and compared to the womb in many ways as well. By creating a similar environment, textiles can help us feel safe, secure, and comforted, much like the way we felt in the womb. By using the techniques, I learned at SCAD I knitted these concepts together into a work of art.
